Concocting Your Life Recipe

try something new picture

The world is now a hungry food critic and you are a chef whose knowledge, skills, work experiences, and the like are now ingredients for a meal. Go.

Everyone owns a very specific and unique set of ingredients to offer the world. The world, in turn, is a hungry place. It has plenty of Ramen Noodles already stock piling in its pantry, and it certainly won’t tolerate canned corn beef hash. The world constantly yearns for new recipes. It doesn’t mind if the recipe is a classic, say spaghetti, as long as it has just the right taste. The world, also a daring eater, is willing to try exotic dishes just as long as they aren’t potentially fatal (think blow fish).

I personally don’t believe in the ability to concoct brilliant meals using just one or two ingredients.  It will appease your belly, sure but not your taste buds, and that is the best part of grubbing anyway, right?  Well, I like to think the world feels the same way. So, if you are anything like me, my personal ice box contains a random variety of ingredients at the moment. No two seem to logically blend together to produce something edible, let alone anything particularly delicious for the ravenous world. I do believe, however that if I can continue to acquire the right seasonings, I will eventually be able to combine all my ingredients in to one smashing recipe.

Okay, that is enough personification and metaphors for one day. Here is my point. Sometimes people get stuck focusing on one idea, one skill, one trade, one path. I find that the only place this gets people is in a mental and physical cul-de-sac. It creates things like ruts, indifference, and basically … zombies. Some may not even realize they are unhappy in their anchored ways. This happens because maybe a person makes plenty of money, or maybe he has become so good at one thing the he never allows himself to imagine doing anything else, all the while ignoring the fact that he is utterly bored. Maybe some become caught up in someone else’s idea of what makes them successful. Whatever the case, it is no way to go about living life.

I am a firm believer in change. I am a steadfast believer in trying new things. How else will you be able to use all of your knowledge and experiences in a synergistic package? How else will you hone in on what truly will enthrall you as a person? Most people don’t just date one person for their entire lives. The have to try on different people and learn from a myriad of relationships (good and bad)  until they figure out what works. How is finding your soul mate career any different? Furthermore, who is to say that you will only have one such match that you are passionate about (and that goes for both relationships and careers)? Life changes. People change. It is okay to change paths. It is inevitable, necessary, and wonderful. Make a point to gain new ingredients. Use all of them. Don’t let them spoil.
